Cutting Edge Festival: Kika Sprangers & Pynarello – No Man’s Land

Met haar lyrische, melodische toon en passie voor muzikale schoonheid behoort de Nederlandse saxofonist en componist Kika Sprangers tot een van de meest hartveroverende musici die ons land rijk is. Melancholie en vloeiende harmonieën spelen een hoofdrol in haar sprankelende klanktaal die een breed publiek aanspreekt. In 2019 maakte Sprangers voor het Grachtenfestival de juichend besproken suite No Man’s Land. In de Nieuwe Kerk brengt zij deze compositie mét de strijkers van Pynarello en haar ritmesectie met daarin onder andere pianist Wolfert Brederode. De verbinding tussen man en vrouw staat centraal. Nu de focus vaak op de positie van vrouwen ligt, voelen mannen zich gauw buitengesloten. Sprangers zoekt verzoening. Karakter moet voorop staan, gender komt daarna. Of doet het er misschien niet toe?

With her lyrical, melodious sound and passion for musical beauty the Dutch composer and saxophone player Kika Sprangers belongs to one of the most heart-warming musicians in our country. Melancholy and flowing harmonies play a leading role in her sprinkling sounds that apply to a large audience. In 2019 Sprangers composed the raving reviewed suite No Man’s Land for the Grachten festival. She played this composition with the strings section of Pynarello and her rhythm section with among others Wolfert Brederode in the Nieuwe Kerk. The connection between man and woman plays a central role. Now that the focus is more often on the position of women, the men easily feel excluded. Sprangers seeks for reconciliation. Character comes first, gender follows. Or maybe it doesn’t matter?
